Leo Apotheker is drastically restructuring HP [1].
That means the end for HP's PC business and HP's WebOS product line.
Not sure about this - either this is incredibly clever or absolutely stupid.
I think it is the correct move that HP gets rid of it's PC business. Reminds me a bit of IBM when they sold their consumer PC product lines to Lenovo, focusing on consulting and big business.
But canceling WebOS is a different thing. Technically speaking WebOS is not yet the best OS (Apple's iOS is still leading the way), but it is absolutely on the right track. Focusing on HTML for App development is just great. The usability of WebOS is great. The development environment is also cool. Combining that with HP's knowledge in manufacturing is just perfect.
Leo clearly tries to mimik IBM's 2005 restructuring. But times are different now. I strongly think that especially smartphones and tablets will become a huge market in the future.
But Leo digged a grave for WebOS. Not entirely sure if this was clever for HP and market innovation in general. But as I cannot predict the future yet - it might have been the right thing to do.
